Volunteers are valued members of the Carolinas Medical Center (CMC) patient care team. We offer opportunities in a wide variety of areas including patient services and non-patient care. Whether you are a retiree, a career professional, a high school student or homemaker, Carolinas Medical Center can meet your needs and interests. We offer a Teen Program for high school students ages 14-17.

CMC Adult Volunteer Information

Carolinas Medical Center has created a wide variety of volunteer opportunities for adults interested in volunteering their time.

We require all our adult volunteers to be 18 years of age and older. We also ask them to commit to a one year time frame of working the same shift preferably every week. Our shifts range from two to four hours depending on the position, the department's needs and your schedule. We have a wide variety of positions and make every effort to match your availability and interests with the needs of the hospital.

If you are under 18, please visit our CMC Teen Volunteer Program

On-Call Volunteers
If you cannot commit to a regular schedule, CMC also has "on-call" volunteers that go through the same process and are trained in one or more positions. This volunteer is willing to be called at the last minute to cover for a volunteer that may be sick or away on leave. There is no time commitment required and it is based solely on when you are available to cover a shift.

Our Application Process
CMC volunteer application process consists of you attending a pre-application meeting. The pre-application meeting is roughly 45 minutes long and we discuss the volunteer program, the process, what you can expect and give you information on volunteering in the hospital setting.  At the end of this meeting, we hand out applications.

The application requires two non-family member references, a background verification disclosure (we do check your background) and a health history form (require proof of MMR immunizations). Once all this information is in to us, we will call you for an interview.

If you are under 18, please visit our CMC Teen Volunteer Program

Nursing Week: Mental health initiative helps teens in schools

Last year was a tumultuous one for young Kitchener resident Kayla. After many years of living with her grandmother, she moved back in with her mother, changed cities and schools and, after months of self-harming, wound up in hospital.
